The Aegean Free Zone (ESBAŞ) has been in operation since 1990 and is now listed as one of the most successful free zones in Europe. ESBAŞ provides all necessary infrastructure and superstructure services; energy, water, telecommunication, natural gas, loading, unloading, transportation, porterage and 24-hour sport services as well as fire department, catering and all kinds of municipal services. The Aegean Free Zone is established on a 2.2 million m² area in Gaziemir District. The Zone is 4 km away from the Airport, 12 km away from the İzmir Port and 1 km away from the highway networks.
As of today, a total of 171 companies operate in the zone, 72 of which are foreign originated. The trade volume recorded in 2015 was around $ 4 billion while the total trade volume of the zone since its establishment has reached around $ 63.6 billion.
The total employment in zone is about 18.200. One third of the total employment created in the 19 free zones inTurkey is in the Aegean Free Zone.
Being a production free zone, the Aegean Free Zone mainly embodies sectors like aerospace and defense, electric-electronic, automotive, machine production and assembly, chemicals, energy, textile, food processing and packaging. The most traded goods are textiles, garments, heavy construction equipment, chemical products and durable consumer goods.
There are production centers of global companies such as Mahle, Enercon, PFW, Hugo Boss, Lansinoh, Pratt Whitney, Cummins, Johnson&Johnson within the zone.
