Most of the companies with the capability to produce medical devices and supplies within the industry are located in İzmir. It is also worthwhile to mention that with its present level of development Turkish pharmaceutical industry in İzmir has a large capacity of production and R & D. With its professional health capacity and natural sources (thermal springs, etc.), İzmir is already a place very well known in Europe for Health & Medical Tourism.
Every year 200.000 tourists visit İzmir for this specific purpose. While thermal springs have been the major attraction so far, the number of visitors for surgical operations such as hair treatment, eye surgery and test tube babies etc. is rapidly increasing.
“Three major universities in İzmir (Ege University, 9 Eylül University and İzmir Institute of Technology) are acknowledged as the national and international authorities in Biomedical Technologies including but not limited to Bioengineering, Bio-mechanics, and Materials Sciences.”

NEW IDENTITY FOR İZMİR

SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY BRIDGES

Human resources, physical infrastructure and research results have enough capacity in Technologies Industry and Production Sector which is now beginning to develop in İzmir. So, the creation of clusters and excellence centres will assure the leadership of İzmir in this area.

The project consists of three stages depending on industrial and academic partnership:

INOVERSITE

R & D integrated with advanced education web

INOVAKENT

R & D Region

INOVATEK

Science and Technology Park

With this unique approach individuals who gain necessary skills will become creative, innovative, solution oriented and positive with a global vision

İzmir is an ideal environment for R & D scientists from both Turkish and foreign countries to work

Greater wealth of İzmir’s infrastructure and human resources will be attractive for local and foreign investments
A cluster in Biomedical Sector will be triggered

LISI AEROSPACE

Jean-Louis Colders, Chairman of Lisi Aerospace Executive Board
“All raw materials, basic procurements and human skills required are here. In addition, Turkey is very close and part of the second largest market, Europe, in regards to the subject. It is integrated with the EU aviation market. Logistically it is very suitable. It is not a country where general costs are low, however, the cost of labour and the country’s consistency helped us to make our decision. We are going to increase the capacity of manufacturing a lot more in 2009. İzmir is due to become our largest manufacturing facility with a workforce of 500 staff”.

FOKKER ELMO/ NETHERLANDS

Adriaan Leyte, Deputy Chairman in charge of Sales and Marketing at Fokker Elmo B. V
“We have chosen İzmir as our new manufacturing facility. As it is, a country that is a member of NATO Turkey will specialise in aviation projects. While we were investigating places to deem as our manufacturing centre, in order to manufacture cables used in military planes, one of our customers suggested Turkey. With its skilled workforce and being a member of the NATO Turkey was in a very advantageous situation. In as short a time as a year, we established a facility with an investment of 12 million USD ready to employ 350 people. We plan to increase the number of staff to 500 within 5 years. We will become a member integrated in Turkish aviation and space industry in the very near future.”

PFW/ Pfalz-Flugzeugwerge

Jürgen Viehrig, General Manager of (PFW) Turkish Aviation
“We manufacture for Airbus. We started by manufacturing spare fuel tanks and then expanded to manufacturing pipe for Airbus, and finally we have now started to manufacture parts for Boeing. Our production will triple with new demands. We are due to employ 18 more personnel in the upcoming period. We also have a project to manufacture military planes. We are going to increase our current turnover, roughly 18 million EURO, to 40 million EURO in the next five years.
