Food and beverage industry comprises 19% of total GDP of Turkey in 2008.
Rising disposable income and changing consumption patterns, along with the increase in the number of women in full-time employment, have led to an increase in interest towards packaged and processed food such as ready-made meals and frozen food.
As the sector gets more sophisticated, Turkey is becoming one of the largest markets for baked goods with its bread, an important element of Turkish diet, resulting in some of the highest rates of consumption per person in the world.
Traditionally, artesanal and unpackaged products have dominated Turkish dairy market, holding back widespread growth but also offering potential to investors.
Turkish beverage sector is one of the leading industries in Turkey, constituting an important portion of the country’s GDP.

Beverage market in Turkey increased significantly between 2001 and 2008, growing at an average annual rate of 5.2 %. Beverage consumption per person in the country is around 300 litres, poimtimg out to a strong growth potential.
There are more than 40 beverage brands from 35 producers in the country. 596.3 million litres of production was registered in 2007. The foreseen growth for alcoholic drinks sales in Turkey is 17.8% until 2013. Growing number of young Turkish consumers, rising income and high touristic potential of the country are expected to contribute immensely to the gorwth of alcoholic drinks industry.
Milling & pastry products, sugar & confectionery, chocolate & cocoa products, pasta & biscuits, fishery products, poultry and drinking water are also promising, along with the fast developing organic agricultural sector.
In 2008, the number of international companies in Turkish food and beverage industry increased 1.5 times, reaching 369. 21.4% of the companies in food and beverage industry operated in processed wheat flour products sector, 19.8% operated in processed fruit and vegetable products sector, while 14.7% operated in milk and dairy products sector.
Total export revenues of four products; hazelnut, raisins, dried figs and dried apricots reached 2.2 billion USD in 2008. |

4.6% of Turkey’s total agricultural production value With its climate band and elligible agriculture, İzmir is the land of fruits, typical to Mediterranean strip. 4.3% of Turkey’s total fruit production Within the period between 1995 and 2007, the average amount of fruits produced in İzmir was 592.000 tonnes per annum. According to 2006 prices, total fruit production is 917.687.160TRL. 59.7% of this figure is composed of Stone fruits, 20.3% of grape-like fruits, 9.2% of citrus fruits, 5% of nuts, 4.7% of subtropical climate fruits and 1.1% of pome fruits.

Between 1995 and 2007, İzmir contributed 10.7% on average per annum to overall olive production in Turkey. Within total production, share of production for oil purposes was 87.8%. In Turkey İzmir ranks second in terms of fig cultivation, considering the number of fruit trees and production amounts. İzmir stands out with its share of 32.5% in the overall artichoke production in Turkey.
