The interest for the İzmir Free Zone from both domestic and foreign investors continues to increase as the Zone works towards the goal of becoming one of the internationally acclaimed and most preferred free zones for investment with a managerial, institutional and environmental infrastructure that is completed within the scope of short term goals. İzmir Free Zone Founder and Operator (İZBAŞ) Chairman of Board Eyüp Sevimli stated that a total of 172 firms, 146 domestic and 14 100% foreign, have been operating in the Zone as of the end of 2016 and added: "A total of 2.342 people are employed by these firms. We expect for the employment in the Zone to reach 3.500 along with the firms that will start operating in 2017.”

Stating that İzmir Free Zone is preferred by domestic and foreign investors for its infrastructure, outlook and low cost of investment, Sevimli noted that there has been a significant increase in interest from investors from different sectors in recent years. Sevimli highlighted that the Zone has become more attractive in terms of subsidiary industry when US based TPI Composites, one of the biggest composite wind blade producers, begun production in the Zone at the end of 2016.

"Export Volume in the Zone Will Increase With Value-Added Investment Demands"

Eyüp Sevimli emphasized that Bareks Plastic, an affiliate of the Bakioğlu Holding and one of the most important firms in the packaging sector, had decided to invest in İZBAŞ and started production as of April 2017 and added, "The Netherlands based marble firm Kayden Stone Marble and İstanbul based Solu-Fert Kimyevi has also joined the investors in the İzmir Free Zone. The fact that our new investor firms will conduct export-oriented production is very pleasing for our zone, for İzmir and for the country's economy. Milk Academy Food, which will produce lactose-free cheese and export it all to the American market, is scheduled to start production in 2018.

Leather Production Leads in Sectoral Distribution

Stating that İzmir Free Zone has become a zone that embodies mixed sectors along with a change in corporate identity, Sevimli noted that leather production and trade rank in top among sectoral distribution due to the advantage of the Leather Specialized Customs. In addition, Sevimli mentioned that energy, chemical production and trade, food, electric-electronic, automotive, plastic and PVC profile sectors are other lines of business that have invested in the İzmir Free Zone.

There is a 9.000 cubic meter modern wastewater treatment facility and a regular storage area for leather and chemistry sectors in the Zone. The proper solid waste within the Zone is collected by İZBAŞ. The İZBAŞ Solar Sludge Drying Facility has been operating since the end of 2016.

Mentioning that İzmir Free Zone is 40 kilometers from the İzmir Port and 26 kilometers from the Aliağa Port Sevimli added, "We are 40 kilometers from the Çandarlı Port which is to be one of the biggest ports in the world when the construction is completed. Due to this, our logistic advantage will increase in the future. İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport and the city center are easily accessible via İZBAN, a railway system. Our Zone can provide buildings and land with immediate delivery of document of registry. Registered building and land allocation is a significant advantage for our Zone."

Electricity and Natural Gas Infrastructure of the Zone is Completed

Expressing that warehousing services are provided in very favorable conditions, Sevimli stated that professional health services as well as labor and worker safety services are available within the Health and Safety Unit. Reminding that the electricity and natural gas infrastructure of the Zone is completed Sevimli added, "The fact that İZBAŞ conducts the electricity operations allows for urgent solutions to be developed. There is a 9.000 cubic meter modern wastewater treatment facility and a regular storage area for leather and chemistry sectors in the Zone. The proper solid waste within the Zone is collected by İZBAŞ. The İZBAS Solar Sludge Drying Facility started operating at the end of 2016. In this context, İzmir Free Zone offers advantages for sectors that produce waste. İZBAŞ has an Integrated Management System and we also have ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001 documents."
